"An Apple A Day...!"

Growing apple trees in the home garden can be fun and rewarding.

Apple Picking is one of the things I always look forward to in the Fall. The orchards are so beautiful and peaceful. And it is the best way to taste all the different varieties and pick your favorite.

Apple trees are also flowering trees, and it is the pollination of their flowers that will allow for fruit to grow. Many apple trees do not self-pollinate. To solve this, plant several different varieties of apple trees with similar flowering times to allow for cross-pollination.

We just planted 3 apple trees in our yard, a Red Delicious, a Cortland & a Fuji Tree. As soon as they were planted, all the little sparrow birds started landing in them.

The Red Delicious is one of the most common snacking apples in America. This is the most widely grown of all the apple tree varieties in the world.

The Cortlandt Apple has a very white flesh and is an excellent dessert apple.

The Fuji Apple has a dense flesh that is sweeter and crisper than many other apple varieties.

Beware of deer! If you live in an area with deer, you'll need to protect your young tree. Deer absolutely love to browse the buds on apple trees, in some cases they'll even damage the trunk itself. Mesh fencing a little larger than the tree, secured to posts will work in most cases.

Growing fruit will take pruning, thinning, and keeping insects and disease at bay, among other things.

But most importantly, have fun, good luck, eat well and remember,

“An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away!”

Lucky! If we used our back yard to grow multiples of apple trees, we’d have no backyard left! I suppose I’m stuck with other people’s apples for now!
